Our training

Lectures, workshops, walking practicals. Our training takes eight months of hard work and study. And it all ends with three exams.

We have the privilege of being taught by some of Oxford University’s finest academics. Like the Reverend Professor William Whyte, an expert in the social and architectural history of Oxford; and Dr Julia Walworth, Research Fellow and Librarian of Merton College, the oldest library in Oxford.

Then there are the three assessments. First we write a tour planning dissertation. Next we sit a written exam. And finally, we take a whole day practical test. This involves walking the City and a college, accompanied by two examiners. At any four of 36 stops, we have to be ready to give a polished five minute talk (without warning) and answer questions. A daunting prospect!

Our Founder

Dr Naomi Norman is a graduate of Oxford University, DPhil (PhD).
She moved to the city over 20 years ago, and her love for Oxford is infectious. As well as giving tours, she is secretary of the Oxford Guild of Tour Guides.

I love to travel.  I always have. Although my grandmother never left England, she left no corner unexplored. Stately homes and castles. Monuments and museums. We visited them all together. The thrill of learning all about a new place never left me. It is this spirit of adventure and wonderment that I bring to Sights & Delights.
